What is SharePoint?
SharePoint is an enterprise information portal, from Microsoft, that can be configured to run Intranet, Extranet and Internet sites. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 allows people, teams and expertise to connect and collaborate. A SharePoint enterprise portal is composed of both SharePoint Portal and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), with SharePoint being built upon WSS. WSS is typically used by small teams, projects and companies. SharePoint Server is designed for individuals, teams and projects within a medium to large company wide enterprise portal.

Using SharePoint
SharePoint is designed to work with Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office to allow a group to work together via a Browser-based portal.
While SharePoint does allow other browsers to use it you can only get the full experience when using Internet Explorer which requires the use of Windows. It is this reason that most companies employ it as most companies run on Windows which usually has Internet Explorer installed and Microsoft Office
Personal Experiences
I have encountered SharePoint at various places of employment and I can honestly say that it is one of the worst Portals ever. You are limited to using Windows with Internet Explorer. You can only edit Microsoft Office documents through it, others like OpenOffice aren't handled so well.
I do not recommend using SharePoint.
